Building a Support Network for Deaf Children and Their Families

Auslan Storytime

What is Auslan Storytime?

One of the important services funded by Deaf Lottery support is Auslan (Australian Sign Language) Storytime. We have partnered with libraries in Queensland, the Northern Territory and New South Wales, to bring Auslan  Storytime to deaf and hard of hearing children. These sessions are led by Deaf role models who use Auslan for an engaging bilingual approach to storytelling. Where necessary they are also supported by an Auslan interpreter.

Traditional library story times are generally hugely popular for young families with hearing children. Providing the same concept in Auslan ensures that deaf kids have the opportunity to experience the magic of stories in a language they understand and connect with.

The Benefits of Auslan Storytime

Children attending Auslan Storytime not only get to enjoy engaging narratives but also learn a variety of new signs and see a Deaf role model use Auslan. Regular attendees often form a small community after coming to each session and seeing their children's confidence grow.

The majority of deaf children are born into hearing families, and the opportunity for parents to meet and interact with people with similar lived experiences builds a strong support network for the family. These sessions play a crucial role in early language development, enhancing the overall learning experience for deaf and hard of hearing children.

Join us as we deliver stories that transcend language barriers!
