Charlotte* was in the middle of a busy day at work when her phone started to vibrate with calls from the Deaf Lottery. Tucked away under a pile of papers, it continued to buzz, failing to get her attention. It wasn't until she stepped outside for a quick break that she saw the missed calls, all from the same number.

It was just before her 60th birthday, and Charlotte had won $800,000.

“I was in complete disbelief. I got straight back on the phone with my daughter, and at first, she was sceptical as well. It just felt too good to be true!” she said.

Charlotte’s work had often been a balancing act, dedicating her career to being a support worker and giving back to society’s most vulnerable. She often wondered what her own retirement would look like. “It’s really opened up a world of possibilities for me and my partner. He’s actually hard of hearing, so supporting the Deaf Lottery was always important to me."

“There was this group of Deaf students that I saw playing basketball in school. And so I guess it's always been in my mind that I wanted to learn Auslan (Australian Sign Language),” she said.

And that she did. Charlotte had already started her second round of Auslan classes when she decided to buy Deaf Lottery tickets. “I wanted to give back to the community that’s always been close to my heart.”
She had only recently bought a caravan, hoping to take some time off work here and then for a few getaways with her partner. “I just never imagined being able to retire so soon!”

The win also allowed her to pay off her mortgage and make a heap of repairs she had been putting off. She didn’t have much time for home repairs over the years because of her dedication to her work. Now, with this unexpected win, she is looking forward to finally fixing all the things that got away with time.

“I also want to do something for my children. It would be great to get them a second car. I chose the vehicle package so I can finally have something that can tow our new caravan, but it would be great to use some of my winnings to give back to my family. This win has given us so many opportunities I couldn’t think about before. I like having choices, and now we have so many.” “For anyone thinking about buying a Deaf Lottery ticket, I’d say go for it! Take a chance – you’ve got to be in it to win it!”
