When Gareth received the call from the Deaf Lottery, his life was at a turning point. Days before, he had just left a hospital appointment to check for evidence of seizures—the condition that had cost him his driver’s license six months earlier.
“I was actually in the car with my daughter when I got the call, so I was pretty lost for words.” he said.
“It’s started sinking in now. Definitely felt more real when I saw the funds in my account balance!”
Gareth has been a proud VIP supporter of the Deaf Lottery since 2020. “I was buying a ticket in another lottery when the Deaf Lottery popped up as an option. I thought, ‘Why not?’ and I’ve been supporting it ever since.”
Now, with his licence reinstated, Gareth is ready to get back on the road—this time in a new VW Touareg as part of his prize package. But that’s just the beginning.
“I’ve started planning what comes next. Winning has given me a solid foundation to build on. I want to invest in property on the Yorke Peninsula in South Australia—a big block of land out there. The area is booming, just like Adelaide is.”
For Gareth, family is everything. As a father of five, he’s determined to make the most of his win for their benefit.
“Before this win, I was already helping one of my daughters move into her new place, covering things like furniture. Now I can do even more. My other daughter’s car is on its last legs, so she’ll need a new one too.”
Reflecting on his journey, Gareth shared the challenges he’s faced and the values that have guided him through tough times.
“I’ve never had much in life. My childhood was rough—I even lived on the streets for a while. So, I know what it’s like to need help. My motto has always been: stay positive, help others, and it’ll come back to you.”
“I lost my job, then had to lean on family for support. It felt like one challenge after another. But I kept pushing forward, trying to focus on the good.” With his winnings, Gareth is now taking the time to plan his next steps.
“I want to be in a position where I can choose when I work and enjoy life on my terms.”
From everyone at the Deaf Lottery, we wish Gareth all the best as he embarks on this exciting new chapter. Stories like his showcase the incredible difference your support makes—not only for our winners but also for the Deaf community we serve together.
