Gonketa is a significant name in the Australian Deaf community. His art is well recognised and has even been featured on billboards, and at the end of 2023 Deaf Connect supported him to produce an extraordinary experiential art exhibition in regional Victoria. The exhibition offered a cultural exchange, and an immersion into the Deaf experience.

“People often ask me what language I think in internally, and I want to bring it to life and show it to everyone. A student asked me this question yesterday: "What can you hear? Like I can hear English inside my head."

I responded: "I can't hear; all I can see are visual communications. I imagine how we communicate through body expressions, whether it's with hands or without them. It's all visual. Even now, I can see it."

The Deaf Lottery has provided support to the community for over 35 years, helping Deaf and hard-of-hearing Australians achieve their goals, from the ordinary to the extraordinary. These grants play a pivotal role in supporting and empowering the Australian Deaf community – from allowing sporting teams to compete on an international scale, to the development of television shows, or facilitating events that build ties within the Deaf community.
